The primary purpose of this case study is to detail the methodology involved in enhancing the COMPFEST 13 recruitment website to better meet user needs. The anticipated impact of the proposed design improvements is to simplify and streamline the registration process for the COMPFEST 13 committee.
The catalyst for this redesign was my personal experience with the existing platform, where I encountered navigational difficulties during my registration process.
Navigating through the website to locate the desired division was challenging, as the division menu was not immediately visible. This user experience issue sparked the idea of a user-friendly redesign that prioritizes ease of navigation and accessibility.
To confirm the universality of the challenges I faced, I interviewed other COMPFEST 13 committee registrants. I conducted interviews with four Fasilkom UI students who had registered for the COMPFEST 13 committee. The feedback varied, pointing towards a need for a more intuitive navigation system, confirmation steps to prevent accidental selections, and overall praise for the user-friendly nature of the existing design.
“gw pas lanjut, milih lanjut gasengaja, jadi langsung gabisa diubah lagi” — BG“scroll yang bagian kiri detailnya kurang pas, dia jadi agak kebawah gitu, kayak ngira lu scroll udah mentok bawahnya, tapi ternyata masih ada.” — VS“Salut sama webnya, Website nya udah user friendly, ga ada ngerasa kesulitan pas ngegunain websitenya” — JA“Waktu daftar sering kepencet gitu, gabisa dibatalin, ga ada konfirmasinya” — KR
Based on the collected feedback, two primary user requirements emerged:
The User Flow Design outlines the complete journey of a user, from the initial interaction with the COMPFEST recruitment website to the final step of submitting the application.
Initial design ideas were captured using hand-drawn low-fidelity wireframes, serving as a blueprint for the subsequent prototype.
To mitigate the issue of accidental selections, a confirmation modal was proposed. This feature seeks explicit user consent, ensuring that the selected division is the final choice.
To address visibility concerns, the division card was moved to a more prominent location on the page, thus improving its discoverability.
Two prototypes were created to visually represent the proposed changes:
Verification Feature: The verification modal includes a checkbox to confirm the user’s selection before proceeding, ensuring the finality of the choice.
Division Pages: The division card is repositioned at the top of the page for better visibility, improving user navigation and selection experience.
This case study presents an in-depth look into the process of user-centric design and its implications on the COMPFEST 13 recruitment website. Derived from user feedback and personal experiences, the proposed improvements aim to enhance user satisfaction and interaction with the platform. This study hopes to inspire and provide valuable insights for future UX practitioners and enthusiasts.
